Origin: Regiones tropicales y subtropicales del Japón, China y Malasia.
Etymology: el nombre genérico científico deriva del griego «kykas» empleado por Teofrasto al referirse a una palma. Sin embargo, a pesar de su aspecto, las cicadáceas no tienen nada que ver con las palmas.
